Millions GASP as Hip Hop and Soul Collide
It is believed to have originated in late 1990 by Kedar Massenburg of Motown Records, the term refers to Neo Soul genre musical that many observers are calling for the revitalization of the soul. This genre is fairly unique in the way it blends the old-school soul and R & B with styles ranging from blues and electric rock to poetry and spoken word. Raphael Saadiq, Tony Toni Tone is largely credited for the birth of the revolution with artists as D'Angelo and Erykah Badu leading the wave in the new millennium. While the next generation of soul features a balance of many musical elements, a of the most significant is hip hop. Since the genera are so closely linked, it should come as no surprise that some of the brightest stars of hip hop today are making the transition to soul music.
The history of hip hop and soul
Pick an album of almost any hip hop artist has prevailed in the past two decades and is sure to encounter a familiar hook you've heard somewhere. It may be fragments of Etta James, "Hard to Handle "by Nas Affirmative Action or a touch of" I Miss You "Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes slipped into Jay Z's" This Can not Be Life. "
From the beginning, hip hop artists have paid tribute to classic soul music, using samples in their songs catchy. The trend remains popular today, it is not uncommon to hear the angelic voice of Nina Simone lyrics fused with rapper Talib Kweli consciousness or the sound of Curtis Mayfield soul music complementing Grammy Award winner artist Kayne West. It is the affection and respect for the old school that has been translated into more and more artists going soul.
In 1984, a group known as MD Force began recording with Tommy Boy Records, claiming that his style of music combines musical influences from different eras. Although this quartet was strongly hip hop influenced by the early 1950s doo wop with 1960 and 1970 left their impressions on the soul. Force MD were inspired by the Fat Boys, LL Cool J, Run DMC and Whodini but most are not aware that we also got into the penguins and five privates, groups that are on the corner doo wopping before these kids were born yet. Anyone familiar with the sound of Force agreed that the MD was very advanced for its time, delivering hip-hop neo years as the soul before Mary J. Blige was anointed as the Queen of Hip Hop Soul.
Who has been the soul?
Several hip hop artists and producers are showing diversity through the release of tracks mixed with moving elements. Common has always been considered a hip hop artist genre bordering the soul, but you may be surprised knowing that DJ Jazzy Jeff has been successfully dabbling with these experimental sounds, as well. Over the years, Jazzy has produced a series of albums with songs driven soul with names like Jill Scott and Raheem DeVaughn among many other aspiring artists soul. The fusion of these genres continuous dynamic is good to see that not only received by soul music fans, but also helping to bring neo soul to the surface and reach the ears of most listeners.
