Word formation and word processing training

Today, the formation of words the words "has no clear, universally accepted use. It is sometimes referred to all processes related to changing the form of the word, for example, affixing, which is a matter of morphology . In its broadest sense means the word formation process of creating new lexical units. Although it seems that the difference between the morphological changes a word and creating a new term is quite easy to perceive, sometimes there's a dispute as to whether the mixture is still a morphological change or make a new word. There are, of course, many processes of word formation that does not generate controversy and are very similar in most languages. One of the distinguishing features of human language is creative, we mean the ability of native speakers to produce and understand language new forms in their language. While creativity is most evident when it comes to the formation of the sentence, it is also evident in our knowledge lexical, where new words are added regularly to our mental lexicon. In this article, the most comprehensive exhibitions of word formation processes that speakers of a language use regularly (and unconsciously) for creating new words in their language are presented.

Compounding

Noun + Noun

The most common type of word formation is the combination of two (or more) names to form a name that follows:

Noun + Noun = Noun

Examples: mining, wallpaper, toothbrush

The first of these two compounds may be descriptive (Water or a cleaning cloth with which [or tables] tissue), or both compounds can create a whole new meaning altogether (railway ie, which is not a "road" in the typical sense of the word.) It is also possible to form words whose components are of equal importance or descriptive sense, for example, a washing machine refers to an object combining two functions.

There are, of course, many more ways how different compound names can be connected to each other and how their new meanings can be better explained grammatically. In most cases, however, the nature of these compounds is self-explanantory, and their meaning is quite understandable even to those who meet the first time.

Note that compound names usually appear as two separate words, only the most commonly used, those that found in the language of every day, and usually consist of more than three syllables are in a single word. Hyphens (-) between segments of a compound name are absolutely exceptional. Examples:

window sill (the threshold in a window), window (window shop) doorkey (a key to the door), BookPage (a page in a book), silverspoon (a silver spoon), water pipe (a pipe that carries water), shipbuilding (a court for docks), firefighter (someone who fights the fire), Wallpaper ("paper" glue on the walls), Independence Day (anniversary of the Declaration of Independence), office supplies (office products), lack of water (water shortage), Labour riots (riots employees), TV (one set for watching television), headache (headache), falling snow (snow), answering (a phone that is answered), air conditioning (air conditioning one machine), shooting (with a struggle weapons)

Verb + Noun

Here verbs describe what is done with an object or what about "Done" in a word, a new name is formed, usually reference to something concrete, and the verb defines the action associated:

Verb + Noun = Noun: drawing + bridge drawbridge =.

A drawbridge is a bridge that can be tilted to allow ships to pass, or "draw". Here, the name is the direct object.

Hitman = A man who makes "dirty jobs" or that "hits". Here, the word in the context of speech is the object.

In addition, two Segments can be connected by other means, people say the name may stand for an adverb of place: gateway = walk on the bridge.

The usual rules apply to spelling. Other examples:

Passage (a way to walk on), Divecenter (a place where people go diving), track (a strip of flat land where [beginning of aircraft or land "run"]), filter paper (Paper used for filtration of liquids or gases), an entry (a road leading to a garage or a building), salary (the day we receive his salary), check (a check used for payment of wages)

Noun + adjective

Nouns and adjectives can be compounded in order opposite

Adjective Noun + adjective =

Camera Shy + = front of the camera (Shy towards looking or speaking to cameras).

In this case, the result is an adjective, while the name explains the purpose.

Another possibility is that the name supports the adjective or as an intensifier:

cheap = cheap as dirt, paper thin as paper thin as =

Those rules also apply to the association of names and participial adjectives:

Anglo-Saxon brutalizing jelly

compounds more frequent and shorter apparaƮtre as a word while those longer and less frequent are linked by a hyphen. More examples of all subtypes

waterproof (proof or water resistant), marine (ship to resist the dangers of the sea), is a something seaworthy (a plane safely controllable), involved (a person who deserves the blame), a book worthy (in press) trustworthy (Someone who can be trusted), a jet black (deep black), sore feet (I hurt my foot), the heart patient (a person suffering from heart disease), seasickness (being ill effects of a stormy sea), house (made privately at home), power-hungry (or power mad with desire), colorblind (unable to distinguish colors other than black and white and gray),

Adjective + participates

Large, far-fetched, the narrowness of mind, one spirit, high climbing low yield, painted red, with bare hands

Prefixes

In contrast, emphasize the affixing of links, called prefixes and suffixes, which are not independent words, with words of all kinds. Recent coinages of words prefixed

This is a supplement to both selection and conclusion of training current word, indicating the importance of word formation in English today:

anti-choice, bicultural, co-presenter, the cons-culture, uncheck the box, bifunctional, disinvest, eco-tourism, Eurosceptic, ex-directory, Gigabyte, hypertext, interface, intra-uterine, macrobiotic, max series, Megastar, microsurgery, minibreak, multimedia, neo-colonialism, non-proliferation, Pan, paramedics, postmodernism, preschooler, proactive, change the flag, braking, supergun, ungreen, unisex, upscale

Note that the usual rule of hyphenizing training more than three syllables, is not followed in all cases, the respective training has already received standard, constituting an independent word.

Suffix

Verb Suffixes

Here, suffixes, which fulfill the function of forming verbs classes Other terms are defined and explained.

-Ify = to do, cause: to simplify, beautify, to classify, to embody to countrify to ladify, to embellish, to Frenchify; added: names (ie beauty) and adjectives (ie pretty) to form (mainly) transitive verbs.

Also Ize-= =-ise to do, to address the road to shock, to civilize, organize, sending newsletters, to fascinate, to Americanize, familiarize, to legalize, nationalize, to soberize, to attend, to materialize, to popularize, giving priority to privatize; added adjectives and the names of Roman origin, but also appropriate names to form transitive verbs mainly. Note that to apologize, to collect botanical specimens, to sympathize formations are not word here, because the remaining strains would not be an English word independent if "-ize" were taken.

.

Adjective Suffixes

-Measure (also wheat-on words of Latin origin or in French) - words ending in a position to have meaning "that can or deserves to be-ed" (where "-ed" stands for any past participle) or "who can do this" or "that can be done with it": breakable, edible, exchangeable, pitiful, readable, reliable, available, misconduct, treason, knowledgeable, pleasant, forgettable, unthinkable, intelligible, deep, audible, added: mainly action verbs. Note that some combinations as demonstrable (demonstrating) Detachable (aside), or one based on verbs ending-ate, not maintain that the root of the verb base instead of the whole verb. Verbs ending change, there-i; that, however, does not affect the choice of the measure-vs-able, is entirely determined by the origin of the verb. Please beware that these forms are often used with negative prefixes: unthinkable. In addition, it is possible to make a noun as an adjective: The reliable (This can be invoked).

Al (as-IAL) - Which means "The nature", "belonging to" natural, casual, education, coastal areas, tidal, accidental, management, music, criminal justice, drafting, provisional continental added to: nouns to form adjectives mostly non-comparable. Note: continuing body, individual, etc. are not royal training word in the English sense, but they resemble the principles outlined above.

A-(also-ian) - Meaning "in the tradition of", "From", "the nature of" African, Indian, Elizabethan, Victorian, Republican; added: mainly own names, geographic names, famous names of persons (ages definition, ideas or ideologies).

= No-Less: carefree, innocent, anxious, borderless, without pity; added: name (antonym of-FUL).

=-Like nature, behave as: child, man of the world, divine; added to: nouns.

Ly =-nature, periodic return: cowardly, royal, land, per month, all days, added: names, denotations of time. This is not to be confused with the formation of adverbs, what happens when-ing is added to an adjective.

Productive-some =: heavy, dangerous, quarrelsome, troublesome, boring, lonely, added to: nouns, verbs, adjectives. It is strongly advised to consult a dictionary before you form your own combinations.

Ward-= in the sense of: upward, eastward, forward, toward the sky, the way back to land, backward, forward (from front); added: adverbs rental.

Y = the nature of: funny, rusty, smelly, fish sleeping, demanding, bone, nervous headaches, second class, catchy, sticky, fragile (derobitary: type of fish); added: all concrete name, some verbs.

Suffixes concrete nouns

Noun suffixes to form nouns of all types of word.

Ant-(and-ent) = who / which shall, agentive and instrumental informant, plaintiff, solvent capita, disinfectant, servant added: verbs. Consult your dictionary if in doubt.

Er =-ie also of Latin origin: server, dreamer, Cleaner, recorder; added: verbs. Consult your dictionary if doubt. These people often describe the result of their profession: baker, bookseller; = device or an object to fulfill the task of: container, locker rooms, the boiler, mower; added: verbs. = Subject, agency or means of accomplishing the mission: fixing above, do good, added: verbal phrases (verb + adverb); = Denotation of origin of persons: Southern, a Londoner, said: geographical names.

ING-agentive =: work (definite article is required); added: verbs; = activity: swimming, gardening, manufacturing, added to: verbs; = Result: construction, clothing, painting, added: verbs. The result is either a gerund or a participle, depending on context.

passive-ee =, affected by: employee interviewee teachee, trustee, evacuees; added: verbs. The resulting name must designate a person.

Adverb Suffixes

Adverb suffixes, like most other classes of those changes. Note that some adjectives (Friendly) can not be converted into an adverb if needed to be applied as such, inserted a paraphrase is needed.

Ly =-this way. -Ment is the standard way to form adjectives: easy - easily, important - important, and so on. Ly-is added to: adjectives not ending in-tion, sentences (question in a neutral tone, full of enthusiasm, cold blood). It is also added to some neologisms: transbroomstickally. As the foregoing: Friendly - a friendly manner (this that applies to all adjectives ending-ing).

Wise = in terms of ..., as far as ... is / are involved: clockwise, notewise, Moneywise, said: names.

- Ways to = how to: on the side, length; added names.

Recent coinages (Suffix)

Here is a selection of word formation in progress using the suffixes:

microwave, actional, gentrification, yuppiedom, fingers dry, faxed, leaderene, bagging, bimbette, without additive, Kissogram, wrinkle, gentrigy, networking, small natures, ableism, survival, recycling, confrontation, privatize, ECOMAN, Usability, returnik, retrophilia

Conversion

Conversion is the transfer process or a word in a category other word without adding an affix (which is usually called "diversion"). Then we'll see how form nouns denoting actions actional verbs.

Action verbs in the names

The rule: a verb becomes a noun: to swim -> a bath. Orthography not change, nor is anything added.

The verb at the root of this word formation must designate an action: swimming, walking, running, reading.

The name means the result is a single action, a specific instance ("I had a good reading"), instead of the action or activity as such: "I like running" would be correct if the activity as such should be considered. There few exceptions (work = work as such).

Examples:

go for a walk, a long-term, long term (long term), a good stay, work (to mean the work as such), aversion, doubt, to be in the know (ie, only this usage), laugh, offer, bore (person or thing that annoys) rebels, furtively drink (what a person drinks), to find, defeat, healing, varnish, plastic, dump (where something is dumped), haunt, stop

Concrete nouns into verbs

Here I will demonstrate a possibility to employ the widely used verbal expressions instead of the nominal. Concrete nouns, generally indicating things are converted into verbs meaning something connected with the name as an action. This definition may seem abstract and strange, but the following examples will clarify this point:

The company headquarters is really dwarf the other buildings (in Saint-dwarf. = Do st. Look small in comparison). Many drivers routinely Floor pedal while driving this road (to the floor of the pedal = the press so that it reaches the floor of a car). Satellite failed to deorbit (= to deorbit to leave his way round the earth and return). It is necessary to balance its accounts (in balance = to organize something [ie an account] to get things (expenses / deposits) are in balance).

Other Examples: Xerox (to copy), fax, phone, screen, water, fans, bedding, bridge, linking, Cape Town, the bottle, the ID.

All verbs that are transitive in the result.

The adjectives into verbs

It is also possible to form verbs from adjectives without changing the word:

The rule: a word becomes a verb: Low - fainting (Become poor), idle - idle (becomes inactive), Slim - at Slim (to become slim), quiet - quiet (to calm), cleaning - cleaning (for make clean), smooth - smoothing (smoothing).

Applications: They consulted a psychiatrist to straighten things out. While suffering for over two years, gradually eased.

Note that the adjectives participles (color, broken) can not be converted into verbs in this way. Instead, you'll need to convert these participles into verbs: to color, to break.

Remember that some adjectives change form to become verbs: small - lower, wider - extending, weakness - to weaken strong - to strengthen, broad - extending, smart - to smarten, easy - at home.

Other word classes

There are some other ways to change the word class without changing the spelling, add or remove parts:

Word into a verb: They tried to him.

Auxiliary Nun: Of course a must for someone like you.

Conjunctions into nouns: Do not give me any conditions or restrictions.

Adverbs / prepositions names: I have not yet learned the ins and outs of the business.

Verb Adverb more in Nun: I do not know how.

Participate / adverbs adjectives: The meeting had an effect quite High cheer trustees. The theory is that humans, who are after all animals that jumped up ...

Conversions based on classes of names of different words, especially on sentences and subordinate clauses: Some local poor complains of being associated with not-thinking. The comings and goings in the country has the president to rethink his being taken care of-business-approach. An auxiliary army of supporters milled Notorious city under guise of providing aid to help oneself to the non-self in the foot, or, as they called them, the less fortunate. The vulgar, and apologetic I am a servant-of-the-proletariat Look has disappeared for good.

Training other word

In conclusion, here is an offer of word formation complementary which can not reasonably be grouped under the previous sections.

Back-formation

Back-formation is the process of derivation words by removing what is thought to be a suffix or (sometimes) a prefix. It applies mainly to the striking of verbs from nouns.

Examples: Disabled (handicapped), to expleta (expletive), to enthuse (enthusiasm), a liaison (liaison) to rob (burglary), editing (editing, editor in chief), to peddle (peddler), to scavange (scavanger), carving (sculpture, sculpture), fraud (Swindler, fraud) to cool (air conditioning), to keep the children (Baby Sitter), to brainstorm (brainstorm) for washing brain (brainwashing), intimidation (bullying), dry and clean (dry-clean), the house hunting (Hunter House), for sightseeing (tourism), tape-recording (tape) to articulate (articulate (a) of the joint), murder (murder), to educate co (co-education), delineate (demarcation), to emote (emotion), intuition (intuition) of regulation (legislation), pickling (marinade) to ESPON (rope), to be vaccinated (vaccination), vacation (holiday), value (assessment) to diagnose (diagnosis), idleness (lazy), to remember (reminiscene), statistical (statistics), television (TV).

Cut

Clipping stands of a word by the omission of one or more syllables.

Examples: cycling (Cycling), decaffeinated (decaf), fan (fanatic), exam (examination), telephone (telephone), fax (facsimile), a refrigerator (fridge), hyper (overactive) intercom (intercom system), lab (laboratory), student nurses (medical / physician), memo (memorandum), Mike (microphone), film (moving images), (photography), pub (public house), Zoo (Zoo), math (mathematics).

Acronyms

Acronyms are another device abreviatory. Most often resulting word classes is that of a noun: ECU (European Currency Unit), underwater (Stand-alone breathe under water), e-mail (electronic mail).

Mixtures

The mixtures are also used for abreviatory. Here, two or more additional components are the basis of the result. These components are omitted from one or more syllables before worsened mixture.

Examples: + bit binary digit, recorder + camera camcorder, contraception contrasting design + + GEEP sheep goat, literaty celebrities + sequins, modem demodulator + modular + hotel motel motor, the smog smog + + resistance transfer transistor.

Various

Onomatopoeia - words found suggestive sounds, they refer to: bubble, burp, rattling, whistling, Mutter, and splashing.

The words as proper names: bowdlerize, boycott, Breille, caesarean, Lynch, pasteurization, platonic, sadistic, sandwich.

Motion-depictive: band, to scamper away, to clear out.
