Mixing Board

The origins of the British Aikido Board

Origins of the BAB and its predecessor, the renowned "Martial Arts Commission.

British Aikido Board

By Henry Ellis

BAB ex founding member & British Aikido pioneer.

British Aikido Council

With the birth in 1955 of Aikido in Britain at the now famous "Hut Dojo" Hillingdon Middlesex. The dojo was then known as the "Abbe School of Judo," soon to be renamed the "Abbe School of Budo". There were no organizations for Aikido at that time only this dojo. The rapid expansion of interest and Aikido in the UK would eventually encourage Kenshiro Abbe Sensei to another organization next to the British develop Judo Council (BJC). It was the British Council called Aikido "(BAC).

Martial Arts Commission

British Aikido Council (BAC). In the beginning all Aikido came under the umbrella of this organization. In later years, when Aikido was widespread and throughout the UK, several small fragmented independent organizations began to flourish throughout the country. In 1977 the UK govt's `Sports Council" authorized the newly formed Martial Arts Commission " (Monitor MAC) all of the many different disciplines of martial arts including Aikido.

The British Aikido Board was formed later that year.

The Sports Council did what since then by many as a monumental mistake by any of the various Martial Arts, its own independent Bodies, all with full Sports Council recognition. Representatives of these various bodies had to Sports Council Meeting in London, to be held approximately four times per year. Derek Eastman of the ESTA and the Secretary would represent the various BAB BAB member associations at these meetings.

There were the obvious problems at this time in connection with Many of the smaller or newer disciplines of martial arts, those who wanted to stop, even their own governing body status. Several of the already formed committees do not agree with this, that you were prepared to other martial arts under their umbrellas to take, no doubt, as a means to increase their own membership and authority. Derek Eastman and the secretary does not receive expenses from the BAB Funds to attend these meetings.

It was originally a great interest in the development a governing body for Aikido, many organizations, some of the BAB. A large organization such as England's first Aikido pioneer Ken Williams Sensei's Ki ` Federation of Britain `Gt. In later years, several organizations illusions about the changing face of the Báb, as the Ki Federation of Gt Britain, one of the largest Aikido Organizations in the UK. The Ki Federation resigned. The initial enthusiasm for the BAB has faded for many of the British aikido.

Although there is no concrete data available, it is generally accepted that there are more organizations and independent aikido dojo outside of the BAB than in it.

Too Many governing bodies?

In a conversation I had with a senior member of Sport England (Sports Council) at the Kenshiro Abbe Memorial event. I was informed that there is a growing consensus that England in sport there are too many problems with the bodies of so many, it is now thought that `` one `` Body over, as in the original framework of the old Martial Arts Commission (MAC) would function much more efficiently than the current system. There are some very been serious problems with the governing body for karate. The BAB were called before the Sports Council for their support of the attempt to corrupt the true history and lineage British Aikido. The BAB has grudgingly apologized.

At the beginning the British Aikido Board held quarterly meetings, spread throughout the country were the meeting held in the dojo contact from any club. This was seen as a fair way of sharing the various travel problems experienced by many representatives of the association.

Each club would have been on a very nice buffet of cakes, sandwiches and cakes, and of course tea and coffee. The cost for the buffet came from the host club Fund. These social buffets encouraged members to mingle and socialize. This does not happen again.

The BAB meetings have in Birmingham for several years instead. At the first meeting of Birmingham, there would always found a good buffet, most of those who had traveled long journeys grateful.

This treatment lasted not long, it was soon reduced to a cup of tea and a biscuit. With no time to make contacts, which gave little time or opportunity to meet representatives of the other.

BAB Members Money

These early development days of the BAB were enthusiastic days, with associated members voluntarily participating in all aspects of their development for the future benefit of the BAB membership. There were to have no cost, no one asked for the cost either. The members did what they did for the welfare of the BAB. If the crass and inept chairman Toni Davies was rejected, with the following selection of a new chairman, the original ideals changed.

Well, if one is an executive member, it is an opportunity to get those trotters in the financial trough. The BAB has now a considerable fund of built on member money, much of this money from the victims of those early days.

The motorway now gleefully hands out money to members of the executive members under the guise of a `` `` fee, I believe, in the region now of about £ 1,000. Multiply this by the number of managers and it results in a Annual total of the "members money. Once it was, "What can I do for the British Aikido Board" Now it seems to be, " What can the British Aikido Board do for me! ".

BAB National Courses

The BAB National Courses in recent years, an expensive Disaster have been painful, with an average visit 80-90 students eligible drawn a good supportive attendance. 80/90! From a membership of about 10 000 members. With the teachers now receive a fee and expenses. The course first aid member receives more than anyone with a cash amount of £ 200. For this money you could have the services of the St Johns with an ambulance in attendance.

The early national motorway courses needs large venues such as Crystal Palace and Birmingham Sports Centre. WHY? Because the members felt that they were part of a good organization. Today the BAB hires much smaller than places such as Bisham Abbey, WHY? This creates the false impression of a well-attended.

The question must be asked, has grown in the BAB membership, but it receives less support than ever from his Members. In recent years, the "Executive clique" has alienated the membership.

The National Courses in the first years were also supported Audience numbers between two and three hundred students. The teachers were not paid.

Today, the majority of BAB members are no longer proud to be part of it Discredited organization. I get a lot of feedback when the average Member "I am a member of the BAB for the insurance "..... There are many better Martial arts are insurers, such as MARTINS (acronym). Full details can be found on this website

Bureaucracy

Apart from the motorway being knee-deep in the bureaucracy, the question is to be the question "What is to do the BAB to actually promote Aikido?. The answer is simply nothing.

At a General Meeting was once suggested by a member of that production and distribution of a BAB Aikido Information Brochure are sent to the sports and community centers around the UK as a way of promoting Aikido, many members agreed. The BAB executive nearly had a collective coronary at the thought of spending the member's money on something useful. This idea was, before it could be entered in the session kicked minutes.

The Ultimate Challenge

I find it very amusing that the BAB have now, the company employs PPP promotions to face the ultimate challenge to try to advise and to improve the image of the BAB. Has it never occurred to this clique? That they should ask themselves these questions of people who know Aikido very best to consult the membership!.

Suitable BAB A Patron

The BAB is also looking for a suitable "patron" I am sure that Lord Peter Mandelson would be happy to make a call.
