The varieties of different types of microphones
All microphones convert sound energy into electrical energy, but there are many different ways to do the job, using electrostatics, electromagnetism, piezo electric effects or change of resistance of carbon granules. The microphones are used in many applications such as telephones, video recorders, hearing aids, motion film production, live or recorded audio engineering, radio and television and computers for recording voice, VoIP, for non-acoustic such as ultrasonic inspection.
When it comes to microphones used in recording music or performing arts the vast majority of microphones used are either static or dynamic or condenser or electromagnetic models. Both types employ a moving diaphragm to capture the sound, but use a different electrical principle for converting mechanical energy into an electrical signal. Efficiency this conversion is very important because the amounts of acoustic energy produced by the voices and musical instruments are so small.
Dynamic Microphones
Dynamic microphones work via electromagnetic induction. They are robust, relatively inexpensive and resistant to moisture, and for this reason they are widely used on stage by singers. There are two basic types. Moving coil microphone and the ribbon microphone.
The Dynamic microphones have the advantage of being relatively inexpensive and resistant to wear, and they do not need a diet or batteries to operate. A slight membrane, usually plastic, is attached to a coil of wire suspended in very small the field of a permanent magnet. When a sound causes the diaphragm to vibrate, the whole Assembly operates as a generator of electricity in miniature, and an electric current is produced minute. Because electricity production is very low, it must be amplified using a preamplifier microphone. Dynamic microphones are most effective when working with relatively strong sound sources that do not contain much detail at very High Frequency.
Condenser Microphones
Condenser microphones have been around for decades, and although the moderns incorporate some small technical improvements, the sound character has changed very little. Some of the best sounding capacitors were designed 20 years ago. The main part of the condenser microphone contains a pair of conductive plates, one fixed and the other in the form of a diaphragm movement. When the spacing between the plates changes capacity varies, and if an electrical charge is applied to the fixed capacitor, an electrical signal is produced, which faithfully represents the membrane vibration.
The capacitors are more expensive than their dynamic, but they are also much more sensitive, and can capture information at high frequency much more precise. In addition, the principle of capacitor, unlike the dynamic principle, lends itself easily to the production of microphones with switchable pickup patterns, although cheaper models tend to offer only a fixed cardioid.
Electret microphones
An electret is a ferroelectric material that was definitely electrically charged or polarized. An electret microphone is a relatively new type of capacitor microphone invented at Bell Laboratories in 1962. A static charge is embedded in an electret by alignment of the static electricity in the material, some as a magnet is made by aligning the magnetic domains in a piece of iron. They are used in many applications, recording high quality and use of building tie in microphones in small audio recording devices and telephones.
